If you used to schedule Facebook group posts from Hootsuite or Buffer, you have probably noticed that it no longer works the way it did. That is not a bug in either product. Meta changed its API in 2024, and every tool built on that API had to adapt.
This page explains what changed, what Hootsuite and Buffer say about groups today, and which alternatives can post to groups you have joined. All competitor facts come from each company’s own pages, checked on November 7, 2026.
Why can’t Hootsuite and Buffer auto-post to Facebook groups anymore?
Meta removed API-based group publishing in April 2024. Its Graph API v19.0 changelog deprecated the publish_to_groups and groups_access_member_info permissions, the Groups API features, and the ability for group admins to install apps on a group, with removal across all API versions on April 22, 2024.
Schedulers like Hootsuite and Buffer publish through Meta’s official Graph API. When the permission that let apps publish to groups went away, so did the ability to send a scheduled post straight into a group at the chosen time. Facebook Pages were not part of this change, so Page scheduling continues to work in these tools.
What does Buffer say about Facebook groups today?
Buffer says it can no longer post to Facebook groups automatically. Instead, its help center describes notification publishing: you schedule the post in Buffer, receive a reminder on your phone at the scheduled time, and finish posting in the Facebook app.
A few details from Buffer’s own pages:
- You need the Buffer mobile app to receive the reminders and complete the post.
- If you schedule one post to both a Page and a group, the Page post can go out automatically while the group post arrives as a reminder.
- Buffer’s April 2024 shareholder update notes an upside: because reminders are not bound by the API, users can post as a non-admin group member.
So Buffer still helps you plan group content, but a person has to finish every group post by hand.
What does Hootsuite say about Facebook groups today?
Hootsuite’s integrations page says you can schedule and post to Facebook profiles, Pages, and groups, and adds that scheduling to groups requires you to be a group admin. We could not open Hootsuite’s help center to confirm how group posts are delivered after the April 2024 API change, so we have marked that cell “Not verified” in the table.
What is clear from Hootsuite’s own wording is the admin requirement. If your strategy depends on posting in community groups that you joined but do not run, Hootsuite does not cover that use case. If you administer your own group, check Hootsuite’s help center or support for its current group workflow before relying on it.
What are the best alternatives for posting to Facebook groups?
The strongest alternatives for groups are browser-based tools that post through your own logged-in Facebook session rather than the retired API. They work in groups you have joined, with no admin rights needed.
PostPartner is a web app plus Chrome extension. It auto-loads your joined and managed groups, and posts text, images, video, and links with spintax, AI variations, configurable randomized delays, auto first comments, scheduling with auto-repeat, and RSS-to-groups. It is $29/month on one plan with a 3-day free trial. See the posting to multiple Facebook groups organically feature.
Multigroup Poster is a Chrome extension that posts to joined groups from your logged-in browser, with spintax, pacing modes, first comments, and scheduling. As of November 2026 its Pro plan is $9.99/month or $69.99/year, with a free plan of 6 group posts. We compare it in detail in PostPartner vs Multigroup Poster.
Both run in your browser, so your computer and browser need to be on for scheduled posts to go out. That is the tradeoff for posting through a normal user session instead of an API.
How do these tools compare side by side?
Browser-based tools win for groups, and Hootsuite and Buffer win for everything else. Here is the short version.
| Need | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Auto-post to groups you joined | PostPartner or Multigroup Poster |
| Lowest-cost group poster | Multigroup Poster |
| Groups plus RSS, AI, and repeat campaigns on one plan | PostPartner |
| Many networks, a few groups, OK with manual finishing | Buffer |
| Team analytics, inbox, and approvals across networks | Hootsuite |
The full feature table above lists product type, networks, pricing, and trials for all four tools.
Where do Hootsuite and Buffer still win?
Hootsuite and Buffer are much broader products, and for most networks they remain excellent choices. A group poster is not a replacement for a full social media suite.
- More networks. Hootsuite lists Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, and Pinterest. Buffer lists those plus Google Business Profile, Bluesky, Mastodon, and Substack.
- Cloud publishing. For supported networks, posts go out without your computer being on.
- Team features. Analytics, approvals, and shared workflows.
- Free entry point. Buffer has a free plan for up to 3 channels.
PostPartner focuses on Facebook groups, profiles, and Pages. If you need Instagram or LinkedIn scheduling, keep a general scheduler for those.
Should you replace Hootsuite or Buffer, or use both?
Most businesses that rely on Facebook groups do best with both: a general scheduler for Pages and other networks, plus a dedicated group posting tool. Replacing your scheduler outright only makes sense if groups are almost all of your social activity.
A practical setup looks like this:
- Keep Hootsuite or Buffer for Pages, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other networks.
- Use a browser-based group poster for the groups you have joined.
- Vary copy with spintax or AI so each group sees a different version.
- Pace posts with randomized delays and follow each group’s rules.
